My Take,
I am deployed as a contractor and bought this for the sole purpose of staying in contact with the family as well as having the ability to have some basic MS Office software (word/excel/PPT, and Outlook). First let me say that I only paid 450 bucks for this thing during balck friday specials so for the money this thing is awesome.
What I like. It’s quick, nice keyboard, and the 17.3 inch screen is really nice. It came with Mcaffee start up which enabled me to buy the first year of service for less than 40 bucks. This has an HDMI port on it so I bought a HDMI cable and plug it into my TV so when I Skype I can see my wife/daughter on my 32 inch TV screen as well as surf facebook while viewing it on my TV. I can Skype, e-mail, surf the net with zero issues thus far. Cosmetically this thing is pretty sweet, keyboard is very simple to go around and I am a huge fan of the “pinch” option on the scroll pad (although sometimes you can expand/minimize your screen font accidently if you slide your hands across the pad the incorrect way ,but that is simple to over look for the price on this laptop.
What I don’t like- (keeping in mind though that I only paid 450 bucks). I would have preferred more memory just because everything seems to take more to run these days, but 350 GB is fine for what I am using this for (even though after the OS is installed you only have about 288 GB open space from the get go). I keep all my large files on an external so larger capacity is not an issue, just a preference. Second, it came with no MS Office, which I knew when I bought, but wanted to have it already installed on here. I was able to get it for free after the fact, but wanted to see it standard even if it was the 2007 version.
If you are looking for a 17.3 inch laptop, you can’t get a better deal for this quality. Only time will tell how the customer service/warranty works out, but hopefully I won’t have to use it. Firing on all cylinders right out of the box. Fantastic deployment computer! I give it 4 out of 5 stars because of no MS Office suite and only 350 GB HD.

|a lot of technology for the dollar,
If you haven’t bought a laptop in a while (like me) you will be surprised how much technology you can get for around 400 bucks. For an ‘entry level’ laptop this really seems like quite an incredible deal.
pros:
- The screen is gorgeous. Huge, bright, LED, simple on the eyes.
- Thin…really thin compared to an older laptop! And lightweight.
- The keyboard is large…the keys seem more ‘spread out’ than other laptop keyboards I am used to using. Plus a full-size number pad. The keys feel solid….much more solid than, say, older Dell laptops (which I have about 100 of btw). There is no ‘give’ to the keyboard.
- The entire laptop case is made of a plastic that has a “diamond hatch” pattern – similar to the pattern on truck running boards and the like. I like it…it hides the fingerprints better. It feels surprisingly sturdy. It does not feel like it has a lot of ‘give’ to it…many laptops feel a small too flexible to me. This diamond-plate plastic stuff covers the back of the screen and the main faceplate….makes it feel sturdy.
- Brilliant power consumption. Uses 16 watts at full screen brightness.
- Connectivity: HDMI output (not all cheap laptops have that), USB connections on the left and right. Strangely, no connectors on the back at all.
cons:
- The screen is very glossy. Glare will be a problem for this screen. I prefer a matte screen.
- Acer bloatware. Comes with a bunch of crap that you will probably want to uninstall after you buy it. Download “PC decrapifier” (free) and run it….will remove a lot of the unnecessary bloatware. Mostly ads for things that require you to pay money to use them.
- No disk drive light. You don’t know how much you miss a disk drive light until you do not have one. Strangely, they place a power light on it. Why would someone not notice that their laptop is on?
- Not a speed demon…has a P6200 it….but for most people it will be perfectly fine.
- On mine, the left mouse button on the touchpad is a small goofy…has a slight ‘click’ when you press on it lightly, then a second full click when you press on it ‘for real.’ Don’t know if they are all like this or just this one. It might be annoying for some people.
- Another possible defect on mine is that the keyboard arrow keys don’t seem to work 100% of the time. Up and down arrows seem to require pushing extra hard. Again I don’t know if this is on all of them or just mine. If I had a lot of time I might send it back for one with a better keyboard, but I won’t.
All in all this laptop is a really fantastic deal. Two years ago you would have paid $1500 for this much technology.
