A decent laptop,
Our previous laptop bit the dust last week and I needed something semi-quick. I did the usual research and went with this one. For the price $540 or so it is okay. I like the hard drive size and the size of the screen. It is a bit larger than our previous laptop. There are no dedicated external controls for volume which can be annoying as it is nice to press one button to turn the sound off. There are three USB ports which is excellent, but two of them on near the front (closest to you) edge on the right side. So if you are using a wireless mouse and have something plugged into the USB ports there the cable gets in the way. Setup to the wireless network was seamless and making a backup of the system went pretty smoothly. I don’t like the fact they don’t call the initial discs system restore discs, more of backup so I am small concerned what will happen if I have reinstall windows. The keyboard feels nice, but when using the backspace key and the arrow keys there seems to be a bit of delay. So if using backspace I will often delete more than expected or I need to wait for the cursor to catch up. The arrow keys need to be pressed pretty firmly sometimes to go.
Using Lightroom 3 I have noticed a ‘hesitation mark’ when using the grid view. A thin black line will appear on the thumbnails from where the thumbnail was ‘cut off’ by the screen as you scroll. It goes away and doesn’t effect your actual image, just annoying when looking at your pictures.
I’m giving it three stars to star with reserving the right to make an edit as I get more used to it and tweak the system.

|Certainly worth $449. ( Price paid on Cyber Monday 2011.),
I would rate this laptop 4 stars at its $549 list price. On some key features (My ratings/comments):
17.3″ HD+ Widescreen CineCrystal(tm) LED-backlit Show: (1600 x 900) resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio ( 5 Stars : Vivid colors and bright. HDMI(tm) Port delivers quality video and audio on widescreen HDTV.)
Intel® Core(tm) i3-370M Processor(2.4GHz, 3MB L3 cache)( For standard users like myself 4 stars : Sufficient processing speed for most computer tasks.) 640GB Hard Drive ( Again for standard users 4 stars : enough storage for all my stuff except my vast i Tunes library. )
4GB DDR3 Memory ( 3 stars : I have recently ordered upgrade to 8GB DDR3 Memory. I had a problem with matching computer memory. I don’t know if this is specific to my computer only but the Crucial System Scanner and 3 downloaded System Info Viewers failed to identify the factory installed memory type. Acer support also was unable to tell me if it was DDR3 PC3-10600 or DDR3 PC3-8500. The simple solution is to check the physical memory module which I still haven’t done as I have a history of damaging electronics. I got a fantastic deal online for 8 GB Kit (4GBx2) DDR3 PC3-10600 1333 MHz as I wanted a matching pair and also the price was not much more than a single 4GB memory module. I am waiting for my IT tech friend to do this simple memory install for me. I am not to computer-savvy.
Intel® HD Graphics ( 3 stars : Graphics are lacking. Best to buy a different laptop if graphics and gaming is what your looking for.)
I wish it had a USB 3.0 port. I do agree with the 1st review about the two USB 2.0 ports near the front edge on the right side as being a problem if one of the ports is plugged in and you are using a wireless mouse. The back space key and the arrow keys do not have a delay on my computer. Although I do find the plastic keyboard buttons not to my quality expectations. Of course I’m comparing it to my experience with my Apple MacBook Pro and HP Pavilion.
All in All the Acer® Aspire AS7739-6830 Notebook gives a excellent bang for the buck. At first I wasn’t so thrilled with it, but after using it for 3 weeks, I am quite pleased with this buy.

|Fantastic value,
I bought an Acer 17 inch later year for myself and was very satisfied with the quality and speed. This year I bought one for my daughter for $50 less that has a quicker processor and large disc. It is noticeably quicker with the same fantastic quality. Very satisfied!
