Lightly padded but sturdy enough. Excellent value for the price., November 19, 2010

This boxy shaped laptop case has two compartments, a top handle that is padded and comfortable to grip, and a sturdy enough adjustable shoulder strap. The main compartment opens at the top with two zippers like in a suitcase, has room huge enough for up to a 17″ laptop that can be secured in place by the single velcro strap in the middle, and the inside pocket can accommodate thin volumes of folders or documents. The slightly smaller front compartment opens at the top with one zipper, and can really fit a netbook or an ipad if you really have to, but most people would probably just use it for storing documents, laptop accessories or other small portable electronics, as well as other small stuff like pens, etc.

The material is not too shabby but I wish it had more padding. Also, even though the main compartment is touted as appropriate for laptops sized 15″ to 17″, I personally would use it only for carrying a 17″ laptop, because smaller laptops may shift around.

Except for the few concerns mentioned above, I reckon this laptop case does offer excellent value for its price.

Inexpensive, reasonably functional, December 14, 2010

I reckon the most vital thing to say about this laptop bag is that it is extremely inexpensive. You can easily pay more for a cleaning gel for your laptop than you pay for this bag. So if you are using a very inexpensive 17″ laptop and are on an incredibly tight budget where every penny counts, this bag could be just what you need. It has light padding that fits around a 17″ laptop well. There’s an inner pocket to hold a thin folder of paper, and an outside zippered pocket to hold accessories. The outside pocket has nooks for pens and other smaller objects, to keep them organized.

There is both a handle and a shoulder carrying strap.

My concern here is that you’d have to be on an *extremely* tight budget not to want to upgrade your bag to something more sturdy. For example, when I’m traveling with my laptop, my laptop is not an “optional accessory” for me. I absolutely need the laptop to be working smoothly so I can access my email, remote terminal in to my servers, and keep my life running. If that laptop had a system failure because it was bumped or knocked, I’d be in deep distress. I am willing to invest *far* more than the price of a casual dinner out to protect my laptop.

I would have to reckon, even imagining someone who was a starving student and they could only afford a run-down laptop worth $200, that for them that laptop would be even more precious, relatively. While I could grumpily buy myself a new laptop if I had to, a starving student would probably be completely out of luck and now face serious hurdles in finishing their schooling. They might be even more in the position where they should get a sturdy laptop bag to safeguard their most precious investment. Something with more padding, especially for a laptop that is 17″ and therefore not on the light side.

Still, if you have nothing at all, and you are scraping pennies out of your sofa to keep your laptop a bit safer, this will do the job.

NOTE: The bag itself comes with a tag on it that says 15-17″ for the size. I would NOT place anything smaller than 17″ in here. A 15″ laptop is not held securely at all (I tested one out).
